The Super EZy is the best model in the Sub 2 kilogram (4.4 lb) category I’ve seen for years. In Australia the Ready to Fly version retails for around $499. It weighs in at 1kg or 2.2 lbs. Waxing lyrical about this great model started quite a few years back when RCM News magazine awarded it Product of the Year twice
Version 2 discarded the two piece removable tailplane and marvellous spinner otherwise the manufacturer has avoided making wholesale changes to this great combination. Horizon Hobby has done very well with the Apprentice and Apprentice S but Super EZ Version 4 with the Reflex Stabiliser (aka 3 axis gyro) is a much better value proposition. Like the Apprentice the EZ also sports too much horsepower for basic training. Suggested control throws are too touchy but simple remedies proven in practice are at hand
The ready to fly version comes with one $50 flight battery pack and a simple 240 volt charger. Simple, no buttons to push it takes over one hour to recharge the battery pack. This is where add-ons by way of extra equipment begins. To achieve my recommended five flights per session you need to arrive at the flying field with another four charged battery packs. Charging five battery packs with the supplied charger will take around five hours. A charger with multiple outlets is the go. Spending more on a dual charger capable of 12 volt operation makes three battery packs viable. Throw in a few spare propellers the bill for a useable flying field package totals around $900
The Pun n Play version with a Futaba 6K radio with battery packs and charger will total around $1200 Simple to program it covers most of the bases for your next few years of RC flying. It is a great radio to start out with
A Futaba 10J combo $1400. Chances are you will never outgrow this radio’s capabilities. A $1,900 spend gets you a 16iZ, however, I suggest learning to fly puts you on a steep enough learning curve without the complication of navigating your way through an advanced transmitter. Which is why I suggest the 6K or 10J
Bigger are better to fly and much easier to see. The FMS Ranger 1800 flying field combo with a Futaba 6K weighs in around $1,550. $1,700 with a 10J
Bigger models do have more wow factor and a touch over two grand for the 16iZ combo will blow your mates away. If you are into that sort of thing
